Nothing is original because everything is an influence; everything is original because no influence makes its way into our art untransmuted by our imagination.

Maria Popova, Nick Cave on Creativity, the Myth of Originality, and How to Find Your Voice – The Marginalian

Read this quote a few times..

Let it sink in.

Now imagine what your writing could become once you truly understand and embrace this principle. We often shun the thought of not being 100% original—even though nothing is original.

We writers are influenced by our experiences, impressions, culture, and the people and the world around us, Music, art, politics, film, relationships (nurturing or disastrous), advertising, internet, religion, Whether we realize it or not, all the information we’ve consumed, all books we’ve read, is filtered through us when we write. Call it the Collective Consciousness (or Unconscious), the cumulative evolution of human knowledge, the hive mind. Call it standing on shoulders of giants.

Now, what if instead of repressing this truth, you actively shaped your stories with it in mind?

How much more fully could you co-create with all the information in the universe if you opened yourself to building with it instead of resisting?
